Background: The volume and pace of city growth in China makes this country the de facto world leader in city construction for years to come. Through green-field construction and city renewal, an urban area comparable in size to the area of all existing cities in North America and Western Europe combined is likely to be built in China in the next 40 years. This scale of city-building will have a global effect on climate change, the environment and building material markets. The Sustainable Urban Development Program (SUD) is a Sino-German cooperation program implemented through the Ministry of Construction (Department of Science and Technology) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) with the support of a number of additional implementation organizations and program partners.

Objectives and Results: The overall objective of the program is that development processes in Chinese small to medium-sized cities should be oriented towards sustainability criteria and managed in a resource-efficient and socially acceptable manner. The eusg assisted the program in developing a moderation format for the “explorer” process using EIDOS software, to support cities in identifying the most suitable alternative options for integrated redevelopment projects.
