Background: The three countries of the South Caucasus, Armenia, Azerbajan and Georgia, face the challenge of generating broad based, inclusive growth to reduce the urban-rural gap and poverty above all in rural regions. The primary aim is to expand foreign trade and therefore to diversify the economy and improve the competitiveness of export products. The core problem lies in the lack of adequate entrepreneurial and institutional preconditions. Thus GIZ focuses on the three intervention fields: improvement of the business development framework conditions, promotion of the private sector in selected value chains and vocational qualification.
Objectives and Results: Eusg is supporting the GIZ private sector development program South Caucasus with its expertise in developing monitoring systems and accompanying strategic decision-making processes. The program’s monitoring system was therefore designed and established at the beginning of the project. This was then followed by a series of strategic planning workshops in the field of diversification, along with sector and value chain development which were facilitated by eusg in order to substantially increase the competitiveness of local small to medium-sized businesses.
